The methods side by side
| Method | Where it works | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| UnLoop in Chrome | Where it works: Chrome | What it does: Hide Shorts from feeds, open Shorts links in the normal player and hide the Shorts tab. All three are free. The tab option is off until you turn it on. | What it does not do: It does not change the YouTube app. |
| UnLoop in Safari on iPhone and Mac | Where it works: Safari on iPhone and Mac, through the UnLoop apps | What it does: Hide Shorts from feeds and open Shorts links in the normal player, both free. UnLoop in Chrome
Add the extension and it works on YouTube pages in Chrome. It does three things, and all three are free. Hide the Shorts tab is off until you turn it on.
- Hide Shorts from feeds. Removes Shorts shelves and videos that link to Shorts from the lists YouTube shows, such as home, search results and subscription grids.
- Open Shorts links in the normal player. Redirects a Shorts link to the regular watch page so the video plays like any other.
- Hide the Shorts tab. Hides YouTube's sidebar Shorts entry and the Shorts tab on YouTube's mobile site. It is off until you turn it on in the popup.
If you only want the tab gone, you can hide the Shorts tab on its own.
Without UnLoop
With UnLoop
UnLoop in Safari on iPhone and Mac
The iPhone app and the Mac app add UnLoop to Safari. Hide Shorts from feeds and open Shorts links in the normal player are free there too.
Pro, on iPhone and Mac, adds focus mode and schedules. If the aim is to stop watching rather than to clean up a feed, read stop watching YouTube Shorts.
YouTube's own settings
YouTube has its own settings for Shorts. This page does not describe them, so check YouTube Help for the current options.
If you are choosing for a child, read UnLoop for parents who want fewer Shorts.
Remove Shorts in Chrome in three steps
- Open the UnLoop listing in the Chrome Web Store, from the install buttons on this page.
- Add the extension to Chrome.
- Open the extension's popup from the toolbar and use the three switches: Enable redirect, Hide Shorts from feed and Hide Shorts tab. The tab switch is off by default.
For more on the extension, read UnLoop's free Chrome extension.

What UnLoop cannot do
- It does not change the YouTube app. On iPhone, open YouTube in Safari to use UnLoop.
- It does not hide the Shorts tab in Safari. Hide the Shorts tab is Chrome only.
